TWD: Who Must Die, Who Must Live, And Daryl

For nine seasons, The Walking Dead has toyed with our emotions as characters we love died (Hershel, Glenn, Abraham) and characters we hate lived (Negan, Carl for too long). With the TWD family concluding Season 9 and moving towards Season 10, the only thing we know for certain is that that trend is likely to continue. So here are the characters that must die, those that will tug at our heart strings when they go, and those that will send Walking Dead Heads into the streets upon their demise.

Must-Die: Henry, Alden, Eugene, Negan

Henry is the most obvious choice. He has taken the mantle of worst actor who constantly puts everyone in harm’s way from Carl. He is so lucky Lydia turned out not to be dangerous (or did she?) when he released her from her cell. His idiocy has brought too much danger too many times. And putting Daryl and Connie in jeopardy is the final straw. Die already.

The only thing I hold against Alden is his silly beard. And people just have to die from time to time. I think his death would serve two purposes: excise that beard from the show and give Enid some pain and perspective that could guide her character into some new depths.

Eugene has had some good moments. But his silly alliterative one-liners and propensity for creative problem solving is overshadowed by his clumsiness that puts people in danger. And now he is jealous. Hell hath no fury like a redneck scorned. I’m worried that his jealousy of Siddiq and Rosita’s relationship and forthcoming lovechild will cause him to do some stupid stuff.

Negan killed Abraham and Glenn. He must die.

Indifferent: Yumiko, Siddiq, Rosita, Father Gabriel

Don’t get me wrong. It’s not that I don’t like these folks. Yumiko is new and cool and I would love to see what she can do. But I am so much more interested in Magna, Luke, Connie, and Kelly. They’re all great characters, but the rules are the people have to die. If I’m being honest with myself, I simply wouldn’t feel that much if Yumiko died.

I will forever be grateful to Siddiq for killing Carl. And we definitely need a doctor in the community, but hopefully Enid has learned enough to take his place if he dies. He also just isn’t that compelling of a character to me.

Why Rosita, you ask? Why are dingleberries brown, cuz that’s the way shit is.

Father Gabriel has had a very impressive arc on the show. He went from being a coward who was responsible for the death of his flock to a badass killer to a garbage-lady-lover. But I do believe his time has come. It would end his righteous arc to die at the Whisperers’ hand while allowing some of our more beloved characters find their way to safety.

Would be sad, but if it keeps Daryl alive: Enid, King Ezekiel, Tara, Magna, Luke

This group is all people that would definitely make me have some feelings, but if their sacrifice gave Daryl an escape route, I’d be down with their demise. Enid has really grown up into a strong young woman and has some nice doctor skills. King Ezekiel continues to be the royal cool guy who sometimes acts like a bit of a rube. I’d like Tara to hang around long enough to fall in love again (RIP Denise). I think Magna has some serious depth to her character that I want to see (plus, she is one seriously good-lookin’ lady). Luke can bring music and laughter to the world. He and Jerry could have some serious comic relief moments.

Outrage would ensue: Aaron, Michonne, Jerry, Connie, Kelly, Judith, Carol

This is the all-star group. Aaron has been with us since the eastward trek following the Terminus debacle. Michonne is a powerful connection to the past with Rick Junior. Connie and Kelly are fun new characters with a lot of heart and toughness. Judith feels untouchable as the last Grimes standing and biological connection to Shane. Carol is Carol. She may be the most badass woman in the apocalypse and I would be enraged if she died, but I think it would be sweet relief to her in some ways. Finally there is Jerry. He has become the lovable Kool-Aid guy slash teddy bear who is attempting to repopulate the Earth with his beautiful Armageddon wife, Nabila. If any of these folks die, I will shed a tear and many of the previously faithful will abandon the show.

Daryl

Daryl has been the North Star, the sunshine of my life, the hero we need. He was just a young, greasy redneck at the beginning of the show. He and Rick butted heads but grew to respect and love each other like brothers. They even had a good, old-fashioned brother wrestling match in their last moments together before Rick’s ascension. Daryl is the fart and soul of this show. If Daryl dies, a substantial piece of all of us will die as well.
